
Adopting the same emphasis on base-building as the original game (plus a number of useful gameplay additions), The Battle for Middle Earth II doesn’t set out to reinvent the RTS formula, but it does feature the kind of frenetic and engaging strategy experience that many games in this genre often fail to live up to.ģ. The sequel to a strategy game that didn’t quite live up to its promise, The Battle for Middle Earth II personified so many of the wider attributes of Tolkien’s universe that I enjoy so much, including an unfettered look into events that are so fleetingly touched upon in the original trilogy, offering a more rounded view of the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring.

Albeit, noticeably less linear than The Two Towers and featuring larger, more interactive envrionments The Return of the King delivered an enaging co-operative hack ‘n slash adventure that rivalled the excitement and spectacle of the movie itself.Ĥ. Although it didn’t quite reach the nostalgic heights of its predecessor, The Return of the King delivered a LOTR fun-factor that remained largely unsurpassed within the realm of video gaming for many years. It’s strange to think of it now, but it wasn’t so long ago that video game/movie tie-ins weren’t viewed with the same degree of apprehension and face-palming revulsion that is so widespread today. That’s not to suggest that all LOTR games until now have been absymal, however.


Shadow of Mordor has been garnering some pretty positive reviews, having been repeatedly lauded by many critics and gamers as the greatest Tolkien-inspired entry so far. The recent release of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor has helped to reinvigorate the gaming community’s interest in the Lord of the Rings franchise, following a prolonged string of less than stellar spin-off titles in the series. “ Looks like meat’s back on the menu boys!”
